Maternity Photography Isn’t About Looking Perfect, It’s About Proof

Ruby was confident in what she wore and how she moved through the world. But at 33 weeks pregnant, my friend was struggling. “I have not found one article of clothing that has made me feel confident or myself this entire pregnancy,” she told me.

This is the part of pregnancy most maternity photography doesn’t show.

Photographer in black shirt directs a pregnant woman in a white shirt in a studio. A large softbox light illuminates the scene.

All the confidence my beautiful friend once had seemed faded.

Feeling good, let alone beautiful, felt out of reach.

Pregnancy is often portrayed as glowing and effortless. Women on social media still hitting the gym, eating clean, finding outfits that flatter the bump.

But for many women, myself and Ruby included, it can feel uncomfortable, painful, and utterly exhausting.

Try being a baddie when you can’t brush your teeth because toothpaste makes you nauseous and the only thing that fits are leggings that are somehow too loose and too tight in all the wrong places.

Two people sitting on chairs in a photography studio setting, smiling at each other. One wears a white sweater, the other dark clothing. Pink backdrop.

Who want’s to be photographed when you’re dealing with that?

If you’re like Ruby, I’m not going to pretend you feel glowing . . .

Here’s the truth:

You don’t need to look beautiful.

You need proof.

Proof that this struggle was real.

Proof that this season existed.

Proof that you showed up every single day so that your precious baby could grow.

So Ruby and I focused on proof.

Pregnant woman in a white sweater gently cradling her belly, smiling softly. Bright, minimalist background enhances a serene mood.

And as I photographed her, something magical happened.

Not because the challenges of her pregnancy vanished.

No.

She changed because she allowed herself to be seen. She released the pressure to ‘perform’ motherhood and instead allowed the beautiful reality of her life to settle in front of my camera.

Pregnant woman in a cozy white sweater cradling her belly, smiling softly. The background is plain white, creating a serene mood.

Yes, it was hard.

Yes, nothing fit.

Yes, she didn’t look the same.

Yes, she was tired.

A person with short hair sits wearing a white shirt, hands resting on their stomach. The background is plain white, evoking a calm mood.

But it turns out none of those things define real beauty.

The beauty is in Ruby’s goodness, her love, and her sacrifice.

Now my friend has images that are more than just a social media post.

She has evidence of the greatest change she’s ever faced.

She has evidence of what her body carried.

Of what she gave.

Of what this season required.

A person in a light, flowing dress stands against a white background, gently holding their pregnant belly, exuding a calm, serene mood.

One day her daughter will look at these photographs.

She won’t see insecurity.

She’ll see strength.

She’ll see her beginning.

Pregnant woman in a soft beige dress cradles her belly, holding vibrant orange and yellow tulips. She looks serene against a white background.

This is Ruby’s story.

It’s my story too.

And this is why I photograph women the way I do.

Pregnant woman in a cream dress holds colorful tulips by her belly, against a soft white background, conveying tranquility and joy.

It’s never been about perfection.

It’s always been about proof.

If you are in a time of life where you feel far away from yourself, this is your reminder to document it anyway.

Love, Melinda
