I started the year with a great desire make unique children portraits, to create for them and their families something beautiful and special.
Young children are such a gift to photograph because they dont hold back emotions. When they are happy they dance around, they bounce, they fidget, they smile wide. All of their beautiful emotions are front and center and I want to celebrate that. I want to celebrate that enthusiasm for life because sometimes we as adults forget. We forget that we can jump when were happy and laugh loudly and smile wide. At some point we stop owning our emotions and start pushing it all down so that it fits in a proper, socially acceptable box. . . . . . . . .
I think that's dumb.
We should dance about when we are happy. We should laugh! We should smile! We should be and feel all these things like we did when we were kids, especially if those emotions are happy ones.
Socially acceptable is unflavored oatmeal. It is the dry, over toasted, stale bread of humanity. It's boring! And its so not who we are meant to be. I'm running after children's portraiture this year because I don't want them to forget who they are and that they are worthy of feeling their emotions.
This sweet girl came into my studio with so much enthusiasm and trust that it was impossible to take a bad picture. From the series of portraits I created for her I entered one into The Portrait Masters competition, and wouldn't you know it, it won a Bronze Award.
Because I adore this sweet girl and her family so much I decided to gift her a portrait from the series we created.
My hope is that she remembers when she danced around my studio with her sisters, smiled and laughed with her family, and played dress up without worrying about anything other than being happy.
I hope she always remembers that she is worthy of feeling all the joy and all the happiness . . . . . . Just like we all are. Love, Melinda
